toby's rain run

spring break has come to an end. alas. i said goodbye to james (now in honolulu) and i went back to school. and- it still hasn't stopped raining. rainy season, i love you.
but, thanks to all the rain, toby's walks have been few and far between. we try to take him out when it's raining and he looks at you like, "uh, really?" and then goes back inside.

today there was a break in the weather! it even got sunny for a minute. naturally, we decided to walk the tobe. just as we rounded the corner of the second block away from the house, andrew said, "uh oh, looks like the rain is coming back..." then the wind got stronger and the neighbor's palm trees started going "rattle rattle rattle!!" then the rain started pouring!!

toby's walk suddenly became a run. we ran and we ran and finally made it back home.
toby says, "thanks a lot, guys!"
a wet tobe is a grumpy tobe.
and we were soaked too! my new yellow sweatshirt oozed yellow fluff all over me. but i was actually happy about that- knowing me, i would have washed it with my favorite whites or something and yellow oozed the whole load.
i was not as grumpy as tobe. i love a little jog in the rain!
then we went to the *dun dun duuuuun* new safeway!! (it's a big deal here, guys) and i hate to admit it, but andrew and i were just as excited as the hawaiians... "look, they have the curry paste we like!" says andrew. "and look, a huge selection of organic mangos!" says i.

in the end: toby is still wet but less tired, it is still raining, and i am eating an organic mango.

new swimsuit, new friends, and new adventures

day three arrived and it was sunny as usual!
we hopped out to the beach and i rocked my new swim suit. i found it in a store the day before and was really excited about it's cuteness- unfortunately, the only pieces they had left were a size d in the top and an xs in the bottom. i explained to the girl in the shop that only very special people could fit both of these on their one body (cough cough- you know who you are!). she laughed, agreed, and then helped me find a suitable solid bottom piece in my size.
the point = i love it!
we got a little tan-er (if such was possible).
and played in the waves.
then later, james and i went to a luau!
which involved all you can drink mai tais and blue things and pina coladas. unfortunately if you drink many of those, your body dies from sugar overdose/a bad headache so we refrained from actually having "all [we] can drink."
this man sitting across from us was nice and offered to take our photo. however, this is all he came up with. a very poor photo, if you ask me. the funniest part is that he had the most gigantic camera and hugest lens ever!
the moral = just because you have a fancy camera, doesn't mean you can take a good picture.
important side note: on maui day 2, we were sitting in the hot tub around 4 pm. suddenly a cool looking guy hopped in with us. i thought to myself, "he looks like someone i would see in austin." and then my heart smiled as i thought of austin. we said hello to him and then asked where he was from. he says, "oh i just moved here, actually. i work just up the road at another hotel and i felt like hot tubbing. so here i am" we say, "no way, we just moved to the big island!" "where from?" he asks. "austin texas" we say. "no way! i moved here from austin too! when did y'all get here??" turns out we flew to hawaii on the exact same day. he is from texas (been living in austin) and just moved to maui. we instantly became friends and were overjoyed to see proof that texan hospitality is truly second to none (as the non texans reading this gag)... so we hung out- he took andrew surfing- and he hooked up me and james with a discount on our luau! he also got us vip!
so- at the luau, we were seated under his name:
speed. josh speed. (amazing right?)
anyway, enough of that. we had a mega huge buffet and james and i ate all kind of hawaiian foods. the pork, the poi, the mac salad- it was all good!
and there i am with my dinner.
this guy was all about the luau and the picture taking.
we had a great sunset.
and then the dancing- which is always fun. the ladies were sooo lovely. and, to be honest, the boy dancers were super fine. no complaints here!
then the fire show woke all the little jet lagged child tourists up. but really, who doesn't love fire. especially when its so dark and the stars are so pretty!
fire man and his fire assistant.
then the ladies re-appeared and tossed some flaming ropes around in the air. it was exciting!
quite a good luau, i'd say. the best part was being totally hooked up by our new friend josh-the-texan! thanks josh! i hope you continue to spread your southern love throughout the pacific. and now we are back home. our flight involved a very early wake up and since it is still raining in hilo, i plan to nap. have a lovely weekend everyone!

day two in maui did not involve many photos. stories? perhaps. but who actually reads blogs, anyway? a story without pictures is just words.

so for today i will just show you some rainbows. hawaii has fantastic rainbows (duh) and i have seen some amazing ones in the short time i have lived here. on our way out the door wednesday morning, we noticed this one!
it wouldn't even fit in one picture!
then today we saw this one. it is kind of hard to see in the picture though. its like a where's waldo rainbow.
all these rainbows remind me of my darling cousin, kristen. she loves rainbows almost as much as the double rainbow guy. and i love her! so hurray for rainbows and hurray for more pictures tomorrow. lots of love!

welcome to maui

where did we go for spring break?
we flew ultra cheap hawaiian airlines early in the morning. i literally fly hawaiian because they give you these little juice cups instead of yuck soda out of a can.
andrew and i read the paper and laughed at how hawaiian newspapers don't really know how to write headlines. they all end up sounding like they are from the onion. squeaker?
how is my sunburn looking, you ask? like this...
and my hair is still salty (as you can see in my nappy middle part).
we landed, rented our car, and drove to the aquarium (on the way to our hotel).
i love the maui ocean center aquarium. it is amazing and beautiful. i really love the unicorn fish. they look like they have pointy noses.
look at this little tiny baby sea turtle!
and of course i love the jellies.
so they just opened their new shark exhibit! it is so cool and has this big walk through tunnel and you can watch the divers feed them their lunch! this guy was telling us about the sharks and little kids were asking adorable questions. i love inquisitive children, especially when they inquire about fish.
hammerheads, sandbar sharks, tigers, reef sharks, and more! and lots of rays and fish!
here is the lunch server.
here we are observing in the tunnel.
hi mister ray!
and so we left and headed for the hotel. maui was under a "high wind advisory" and it was mega blustery!
and then we made it to our hotel. it's the westin!
look at our view! and this was the cheap, non "ocean view" room! are you kidding me??
me on balcony.
me on beach. back in the sun!!
james on beach.
we chilled in the pool a bit.
andrew pool tackle!
hey james!
ugh! don't photo my tummy! (says i)
then i swam up stream a bit- only to learn that it is just a fancy extension of pool. no rapids involved. oh and i rescued that hat, which is now mine. (score!)
**end maui day 1**

this morning, andrew and i went for some maui tacos while james got his beauty sleep.
maui tacos is "mexican with mauitude!" it was actually better than one would expect.
and now i'm heading back to the beach. i'm sad to think of toby alone in the kennel, but we are having so much fun! (please forgive us, tobe!) wish y'all were here!

sun burns and big waves

last night we went to dinner at a thai place that andrew and i love. here andrew is pointing out his picture menu favorites.
byob of course.
note the jump in hotness. hot has two chili peppers, but thai hot has 5? andrew loves it.
anyway, the dinner was really nice and super delicious.
ps- we decided to leave town for spring break. and therefore, toby has to stay at puppy hotel (ie- the vet). andrew and i dropped him off this morning and he was so so so sad. it broke my heart completely. hotels discriminate against dogs.
and since it was still hazy and rainy in hilo (ugh) we drove back to the sunny side...
and this time we brought a boogie board!!!
i struggled at first.
then i caught one! woooooooosh!
overall, it was a long long day in the sun. much flesh was burned...
we ended it at a restaurant in kona that is famous for their mai tai. thus we sampled!
and we sat at a table right off the water. so pretty!
this is james when the burn is only beginning to set in.
we are both looking a little burned actually...
my mai tai flower went in my hair.
in this fab self taken photo, you can really see the redness of my face.
then we headed home- just in time for the sunset. once we got a littler higher up the hills, we stopped to admire it. the clouds were stunning.
every color you can think of!
little blue and the sunset.
it was also really really cold up there- of course the sunburn made it double cold.
andrew took advantage of the stop and had a little sunset beer. and then apparently told an animated story.
ah! i just love a good sunset. it was the perfect end to our hot/exhausting day.
the end.
to see where we will be spending the rest of the break- check back tomorrow!
